The design is based on the saber-toothed tiger (also known as the Smilodon), a predator that lived during the Ice Age. The saber-toothed tiger was not closely related to tigers and is not an ancestor of any living big cat species. It is still unclear what caused the extinction of the saber-toothed tiger.
